Join Us for "Advocacy in Healthcare"

with Rep. Stacey Abrams, Georgia House Minority Leader

Tuesday, February 7th 7:30-9:30pm
1316 North Ave. NE

The health of a man, woman, or child in the state of Georgia is just as dependent on sound healthcare policy as it is on any medicine, test, or procedure. Sadly, those practicing medicine or public health rarely speak out and make their voices heard on the important health matters that are decided every day at the state capitol. Georgia’s legislature needs to hear from you about what your patients need to be healthy. They need to hear from you about why public health is important. Most of all, they need to hear from you because Georgia’s healthcare system should be designed with the input of the people who will be practicing in it.

Join us for an evening of conversation and collaboration, joined by Georgia House Minority Leader, Rep. Stacey Abrams, member of HealthSTAT’s Board of Advisors. Together we will address issues of advocating both in your clinical practice as well as on a legislative level, tips for communicating effectively with your elected officials, and the current healthcare climate in the state of Georgia. Also learn what you can do this year to help maintain our safety net, ensure that healthcare reform has a meaningful impact, and make Georgia the kind of state where you are proud to serve as a healthcare professional.

Despite Misgivings, Georgia Moves Ahead with Exchange

The Washington Post reports on the steps Georgia is taking on preparing to implement the Affordable Care Act, even as the state challenges the law in court:

In Georgia, like many other Southern states, opposition to the new federal health-care law runs deep. Yet a conservative committee of experts has, without rancor, outlined a plan to give the state a health insurance exchange, a cornerstone of the legislation enacted last year.

The panel had the blessing of Republican Gov. Nathan Deal, a former congressman who describes himself as the first House member to denounce the health-care law as unconstitutional. Georgia has joined 25 other states in a legal challenge to the legislation that is now on the Supreme Court’s schedule.

Atlanta's Great Divide

While there has been a large amount of media attention paid to the “Occupy” protests, coverage of the issues spawning these protests has taken a backburner to coverage of arrests and clashes with police. One of the more poignant stories receiving what seems to be a passing mention was reported in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, describing recent census that data have shown the city of Atlanta to have the greatest income inequality rate in the nation.
