HealthCHAT - The HealthSTAT Blog

May Student of the Month

HealthSTAT’s Student of the Month is a new blog feature that highlights a personal narrative or student perspective on a topic related to healthcare service, education, or advocacy in Georgia. Submissions are carefully selected based on the content of the narrative and relevance to HealthSTAT’s mission. Additional considerations are civic engagement and the student’s commitment to promoting greater equity and access to care for all Georgians. All questions or email submissions can be mailed to jen@healthstatgeorgia.org.

Critical Incident Reflection

By Catharine McDermott

My preceptor for the afternoon was a female surgeon, obviously supremely competent and almost aggressively confident.  Her black pumps came to a sharp point at her toes and her black hair was pulled back into a no-nonsense ponytail.  As the medical student assigned to her for the day, and on only my third day of rotations, no less, I sensed right away that I could only hope to stay out of her way and not piss her off, at best.  But I needn’t have worried; she hardly seemed to register that I was even there.  This made for as close to the ideal fly-on-the-wall observation opportunity as I was likely to ever have.

HealthSTAT honors Morehouse School of Medicine students with 2012 Carmen and Arun Mohan Student Award

Health Students Taking Action Together, HealthSTAT, builds a team of healthcare leaders, who are engaged in their communities, and who recognize that care extends beyond the clinic, and learning beyond the classroom.  We unite students in hands-on service, education, and advocacy efforts across Georgia.

On Friday, May 4, HealthSTAT honors Shontreal Cooper, Kenny Esho, and Rebecca Staub, second-year students at Morehouse School of Medicine, for their work in establishing Morehouse’s first student-run clinic in coordination with The Good Samaritan Clinic.  Rebecca Staub describes the benefit of the clinic for students and patients:

Having a student run clinic at Good Samaritan Health Center provides MSM students with more opportunities to be involved in the health care of underserved individuals. It is not only a great clinical experience for MS1-MS4 students but it also provides these students with knowledge of management of care when resources are limited.  The patients at Good Samaritan are primarily the working poor so we have to be very diligent about providing them with affordable care.

Named after the founders of HealthSTAT, the Carmen and Arun Mohan Student Award is awarded annually to a student or group of students who exemplify the spirit of service and civic engagement that is fundamental to HealthSTAT’s mission.

The ACA Supports Georgians, so I Support the ACA!

By Sarah Candler, MD/MPH Candidate 2013, Emory University and Rollins School of Public Health

Today I joined my HealthSTAT colleagues and community partners at the Georgia State Capitol to voice my support for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and to let Georgia's lawmakers and citizens know how much the ACA can help our state.

As a future health professional from Georgia, I recognize that caring for my patients extends beyond the clinic, and I've seen first-hand the tragedy of un- and under-insurance in our state.  Too frequently, my professional training and that of my colleagues in healthcare does not adequately address this kind of trauma. I joined HealthSTAT to educate myself and to help my patients.  My learning about and advocacy for laws like the ACA will help my patients as much as my learning the mechanisms and treatments of a disease like diabetes.  As Dr. Harry Heiman reminded me today on the steps of the capitol, "As doctors, we take an oath to do no harm--we can't with good conscience deny this beneficial healthcare legislation to our patients."
